A Bug's Life Family Movie Night (with a Freebie)

We have begun our countdown until our next Disney World vacation.  Tonight marks 2 months until our next visit to the Happiest Place on Earth, so we kicked off our countdown with A Bug's Life family movie night.  I found several ideas online and then tweaked them to fit out needs.

I had a special little helper today as I was getting everything prepared for the special dinner.  She LOVES to do anything crafty, so she was sa big help!

The Table Decorations

Bug decorations are relatively easy to come by.  I found a couple of cheap, vinyl, red checked tablecloths at Fred's.

I also found a large dragonfly and a large grasshopper at Fred's.  I was looking for a bag of bugs and that was a little tougher to find...I looked at Fred's, Dollar Tree, Dollar General, and then I finally found some at Wal-Mart in the party favor section.

Our movie tickets for the night.

Wal-Mart had these adorable watermelon plates and napkins.  I thought they were perfect.

Wal-Mart also had these ladybug straws.  I had bought the plastic mason jar glasses last year and I just put them away and pull them out when they are fitting for a meal.

Our Menu

I wanted the food to theme around bugs and the movie, A Bug's Life.  Some movies are easier than others to come up with catchy names for the food.  This was an easier one.

Poo-Poo Platter Meatloaf

I know that is a gross name, but if you have seen the movie then you will know that when Flik is in Bug City, he goes into Bennett's and the offer a Poo-Poo Platter, so the name really does fit.

Ant Hill Potatoes

My kids do NOT like raisins, so they were strictly for visual effect.   The raisins were immediately removed and replaced with gravy.

Offering Stone Salad

In the movie the ants are gathering food for the grasshoppers and they have to take the food to the Offering Stone.  (This was my favorite touch to the meal )

Caterpillars and Ladybugs

Who knew that grapes and Strawberries could turn into bugs with just a little creativity and icing.

Walking Sticks

Caterpillar Rolls

I bought some of the frozen dough and place three together on a cookie sheet and let them rise.  I had intended to let the dough thaw a little and then cut the dough balls in half to make smaller caterpillars, but I forgot until it was too late to do it.

Bug Juice

I could not find the Bug Juice brand juice, so I bought the bottles and made my own labels.

Dirt Dessert

Dirt dessert is the perfect ending to our buggy meal.

Honorary Bugs

My 12 year old was sweet enough to humor his sister and wear the bug headband she helped me make.

This little bug is a mess and was pretending to have pinchers....never a dull moment with this one!

I mentioned a FREEBIE....movie tickets for your own Family Movie Night.

Disney Themed Preschool/Kindergarten Calendar Board (includes the FREEBIE FRIDAY)

My Disney loving little girl is 4 and wanting to be "in school" so badly.  We homeschool and so she sees her big brothers doing school and she is dying to learn it all too.  Well, Mommy isn't ready to start formal schooling yet but thought it would be fun to do calendar time with her this next year and have some fun while learning the rest of her letters and numbers.  Since we are a Disney LOVING family (might be the understatement of the century) I knew our Calendar board needed to be Disney themed.

I wanted a larger area to work with so I started with a 4ft x 3 ft bulletin board.  I bought some red wrapping paper and black grosgrain ribbon with white dots at Wal-Mart.

After covering the board I added the black and white crazy circles Calendar Chart.  I designed some monthly headers that are red with white polka dots and some daily calendar pieces in both Mickey and Minnie designs.  This will allow us to do either one as she wants or...

we can mix them up and work on patterns.

I also wanted a weather wheel so that we would have the chance to watch the weather and talk about the changes we see in it.  So I found a weather clip art set on Etsy.  I enlarged the "What is the Weather today?" word art (and changed the colors) to use as my title.  Then I found a Mickey clip art that I could enlarge and I made a wheel also using the weather clip art set....
(I would love to give the wheel as a Freebie but since I purchased the clip art I am not able to do that.)

Next I made some little rectangles out of black cardstock and labeled them Letter, Number, & Theme.  I hope that I will come up with some books and fun activities to go with various themes throughout the year.  Then I started searching on the internet and I found these FREE DOWNLOADS for Disney Alphabet and Number cards.
Links to the downloads below:

My daughter LOVES her new board and is already changing the weather wheel daily and cannot wait for us to start "school" next couple of weeks.

For this weeks FREEBIE FRIDAY I have the month labels, the Mickey numbers and the Minnie Numbers for you.  Enjoy!  If you download my FREEBIE, I would love for you to share it on Pinterest, Facebook, Twitter or any social media.

Mickey's Very Merry Christmas Party

Last December, my family and I took a vacation to Disney World.  Out of all the trips we had made, we had never seen Cinderella Castle in Christmas lights and we REALLY wanted to see Cinderella Castle in lights.  Since we were there during December we decided that we also needed to go to Mickey's Very Merry Christmas Party.

When you go through the ticket check for the Christmas Party you will be given a wristband that allows you access to rides, character meets, and the snacks.  You can also pick up a party guide. This is a copy of the 2013 guide.  It shows you where you can meet special characters and where you can get cocoa and cookies.

So what are the main hi-lights of Mickey's Very Merry Christmas Party?

1) SNOW on Main Street USA
I cannot describe how fun it was to see the snow falling on Main Street.   The snow got everyone in the Christmas spirit and brought out the kid in every one!

2) Cinderella Castle all lit up
Seeing Cinderella Castle on your very first day in Magic Kingdom is magical, but seeing Cinderella Castle in Christmas lights is breath taking.  I couldn't stop taking photos of the Castle.  It was Gorgeous and well worth a trip to WDW during November or December!  I think every Disney fan, needs to see it in Christmas lights at least once in their lifetime!

3) Rare character meet-n-greets
For Mickey's Very Merry Christmas Party, some rare characters make a special appearance.  The lines for these characters can be really long, so you might want to decide in advance if you want to wait in line.  The longest line we saw was for the 7 dwarfs....all together.
Other characters that were:
Aladdin and Abu

Snow White and her Prince

Rapunzel and Flynn

Cinderella and Prince Charming, Aurora and Phillip, Scrooge McDuck, and several others were also in attendance.  We didn't want to devote the whole party time to characters, so we did not see them all.

4) Special Party Parade
The parade for the Christmas party was a lot of fun.

5) Special Fireworks
The Fireworks at WDW are always the hi-light of a trip...but the Christmas Party fireworks were over the top.  It was fun to see them a little different.  There is also a special show on the castle before the fireworks and that was amazing....

6) Glow with the Show Ears
These new Mickey ears are a MUST have for any night time show.  The ears will light up at anytime, but during the night time shows they flash to the beat of the music.  It is really fun to watch.

If you are going to Disney World during the holidays, check out Mickey's Very Merry Christmas Party....you won't regret it!
