Planning for your Disney Vacation Series---Final Weeks

This is part 5 of my series "Planning for your Disney Vacation".  Be sure to check out Part 1- 6 months or morePart 2- 4 to 5 Months, Part 3- 3 to 4 months, and Part 4--2 to 3. This series is focusing on Walt Disney World, but many of the tips could be applied to other Disney Destinations.  I am hoping to do other series on the other destinations in the future.  I found these fun images on Walt Disney World Facebook page and thought that they were perfect for counting down....check them out here and use them on your facebook page too!

ONLY 1 MONTH until your Disney Vacation

1) Start making your packing list.  You can find several on the internet, to use for ideas.  Here is my list, it is a compilation of several I have seen online and then adding what we have needed in the past.   You need to think about all the needs of your family.

2) Make a packing list for your bag that you will take into the park (this is on my to-do blog list)

3) If you want to do a fun countdown for the last month now is the time to start that.  Our family loves counting down to our trips.  This is Our 30 Day Countdown that we did before our last trip to Walt Disney World.

4) Double check that everything is planned--flights, car rental, pet sitter, resort, tickets, dining, etc.

3 WEEKS
Only 3 weeks to go, make sure that you have all the things that you are going to need for your trip....double check everything!  Do you have your flight reservations?  Rental car confirmation? Magical Express bag tags?  Did you need to cancel any dining reservations?  Did you need to make any special requests for your resort?  Did you want to add PhotoPass + to your reservation?  Now is the time to double check those little details, because it will be harder to fix anything that might be missing closer to your vacation.

If I have planned your trip for you then about 2-3 weeks before you travel, you will receive your packet of travel documents.  In this packets you will find the confirmation for your resort, magical express tags (if flying) and a packet of Walt Disney World tips.  Be looking for that in the mail.

2 WEEKS
2 Weeks!!!!
1)  Read over the tips in your packet and make note of anything mentioned in there that you didn't know or that you want to remember.

2)  Download any Disney themed apps that you might want.  Some of my favorites are:
We also like to load our ipods/ipads/ iphones with DIsney Games..some are free, some are a couple of dollars.  My kids favorites are

3)  Come up with some fun things to do that would get your family super excited for their upcoming trip.
  • re-watch the WDW planning DVD
  • Look at the park maps and talk about everyone's top 5 rides/attractions
  • Make a list of the top 5 characters that you would like to see
  • Watch Disney movies
  • Decorate a pillowcase to take on the trip
  • Get a new Disney stuffed animal to take with you
  • ANYTHING you think of!!!
4)  Disney World allows you to check-in online, 10 days before you travel.  This speeds things up when you get to your resort....so take advantage of this perk!

 1 WEEK
Start packing!  There are so many things you will need to remember, that getting a head start can make it easier on everyone.  Allow several days to get the packing done.

The Day before you Leave- 1 Sleep

Double check everything!
  • Look over your packing list and make sure you have your suitcase packed.
  • Look over your backpack/park bag list make sure everything is in it.
  • Make sure you have everything for traveling.
  • Pack the car if you are able to do so....one less thing to do in the morning.
  • Get some rest....I know it is HARD to sleep the night before going to Disney World, but you have a busy and FUN week ahead of you and that extra sleep will be helpful!

The BIG DAY IS FINALLY HERE!!

You are prepared....go and have the most MAGICAL week of your life.  Make memories with those you love!  When you get home, come back here  and tell me if these posts helped you! I cannot wait to hear about your Magical Vacation!!

Planning for your Disney Vacation Series---2 to 3 months

This is part 4 of my series "Planning for your Disney Vacation".  Be sure to check out Part 1- 6 months or more Part 2- 4 to 5 Months, and part 3- 3 to 4 months. This series is focusing on Walt Disney World, but many of the tips could be applied to other Disney Destinations.  I am hoping to do other series on the other destinations in the future.  I found these fun images on Walt Disney World Facebook page and thought that they were perfect for counting down (they start with 4 months up until the day you leave)....check them out here and use them on your facebook page too!

2 to 3 Months until your Disney Vacation

1) Now is a great time to get a little more detailed in your planning.  Look at the different park shows, parades, fireworks, etc.  Decide which ones your family would like to see.  f you are unsure, this is a FREE service I offer my clients.  I will help you create a customized plan that will work for you and includes everything that you must see and do!  I can even help you add your plan to My Disney Experience

2)Make a list of things that you need to purchase and start shopping for deals to save yourself some money.
  • Autograph Books--will you be collecting autographs from characters?  What will you use?  Will you be making one or buying one?  You can find some really cute ones on Etsy.  If you are going to be ordering something custom made, make sure you check on delivery time before checking out! You can also find a lot of cute DIY autograph books on Pinterest.  I have some posted on my boards and will be adding more as I find them.
  • Fast Pass Pouches or Lanyards--when you get those fast passes you need somewhere safe to hold them.  A lot of people choose to use lanyards with pouches on the ends.  You can find a few on my favorite shopping site Etsy and some more on Ebay...these can also be purchased in the parks, but you might pay a little (or a lot) more.
  • One Hour Gifts--our family usually drives to WDW and it takes us 13 hours.  That is a long trip for 3 kids.  So we do one hour gifts when we drive.  I find little disney trinkets at the various dollar stores (General, Tree, Freds, etc), wrap them in a little package,  When we start our trip, I set a timer for one hour.  Every time the timer goes off they get to open up a gift.  They can lose a gift if they do not act appropriately in the car or if they fight with each other.  So far we have not had to take any away, but they know it is an option.  Some people do similar Tinkerbell gifts....leaving a treat from Tinkerbell for their kids to find each morning or evening...if they have been good.  We have also found that these little treats can help cut down on the purchases inside the parks.
  • Travel Snacks--do you need snacks for the trip?
  • Park Snacks--will you be taking some snacks into the parks with you?
  • Bag for the parks--What items will you need to take into the parks?  How big of a bag will you need?  If you don't have one you might start looking for one.
  • Shoes--you will need comfortable shoes (and many people prefer more than one pair).
  • Ponchos-- Florida is known for pop up showers.  If you have ever been at WDW when it starts to rain, you can bet the counters in every store will be covered with ponchos for sale.  These are not cheap, around $20 each.  We always take the cheap thin ponchos (2/$1 at Dollar General) and carry them in our backpacks all week.  We also have some heavier ones, that we take to Orlando with us, but leave them in the hotel unless it is supposed to rain ALL day...then we pull out the heavy ones.  The cheap ones are nice to have on hand because as soon as the shower is over you can throw it in the nearest garbage can.
  • Lanyards and Pins--If you plan on pin trading, sometimes you can catch discounted pins at the Disney Store.  Since you are going to trade the pins, it does not really matter what they look like.  They DO need to be official Disney pins in order for a Cast Member to trade with you.
  • Journal--I like to keep a journal of our information and to jot down things I want to remember.  Some people take little journals and let their kids write their memories in them while they are waiting on their food or on the bus ride.

Be sure to check back to see the other planning tips of things to do as your vacation approaches!

Planning for your Disney Vacation Series--- 3 to 4 months

This is part 3 of my series "Planning for your Disney Vacation".  Be sure to check out Part 1- 6 months or more and Part 2- 4 to 5 Months.

3 to 4 Months until your Disney Vacation

Your vacation is getting so close....and the excitement is building!  The last three months can seem to stretch forever!!  But doing a little planning can help you pass the time.

1)  Recheck your dining plans.  Make sure that you are still happy with them and that you don't need to make any changes (more people going, less people, schedule conflicts, etc)

2) Think about your pictures for the trip.  Will you be taking your own camera?  Will you be utilizing the Disney Photo Pass photographers?  The Disney Photo Pass is a very useful tool, why?  Because everyone in my family can be in the photo.  You can pre-order a PhotoPass cd here...then when you get home from your trip you can view all your photos and order a CD.

Disney also has a new option.  Memory Maker-- This is my favorite.  Read my post about it to see why my family loves it so much!  This option can be added to you vacation package in advance for a $149 ($50 savings).  If you purchase it at the parks you will pay $199.

The DISboards have a great page with PhotoPass Locations.

3)  Begin planning your vacation days.  What parks do you want to go to each day?  What attractions do you HAVE to do?  If you are unsure, this is a FREE service I offer my clients.  I will compare crowd levels for each day, park hours, and events to help you create a customized plan that will work for you!  I can even help you add your plan to My Disney Experience

Planning for your Disney Vacation Series---4 to 5 months

This is part 2 of my series "Planning for your Disney Vacation".  Be sure to check out Part 1- 6 months or more.

4 to 5 Months until your Disney Vacation
3) Order a free Disney Planning DVD.  This is a fun video to watch as a family as you anticipate the upcoming vacation.
5) Will there be any special events going on at WDW while you are there?  Mickey's Not So Scary Halloween Party or Mickey's Very Merry Christmas Party are a couple of special events that require extra tickets.  Purchasing them in advance can save you a few dollars.  Check the dates for these events and purchase your tickets when they become available.

After you have the initial planning done, it is time to start getting excited.  Disney is all about fun and they are all about making your vacation Magical!  The more you know in advance the easier your vacation will be.  So it is 5 months until your vacation...what now?

1)  Visit the Disney World  "My Disney Experience"  page.  This site lets you do some more in depth planning and the best part is you can plan online, download an app to your phone, and your plans are ready and waiting for you!  You can link your resort reservation and dining reservations.

2) Decide on how you are going to get to Orlando.  Will you fly, drive, take a bus, or another mode of travel?  Depending on where you live any one of these could be cheaper than the others.  You will need to consider your location and distance to WDW.  Make a plan and then move forward with those preparation.

If you are flying you can start looking at flights and even book your flight when you find a good price.  I can book flights through Disney, but if you have frequent flier miles you might be able to find a better deal.    If you are flying into Orlando International Airport (MCO) and staying on Disney property, you will be able to take advantage of the Disney Magical Express.  Once your flight is booked, you need to make sure to get me (if I am planning your vacation) the flight information and I will take care of making your Magical Express reservations for you.  Disney Magical Express is a complimentary service offered to Disney resort quests.  You will receive these tags from Disney a few weeks before you travel

(again if you have booked through me, these will come from me in your final paperwork packet)

You simply attach the yellow tags to you handle.  And when you arrive at MCO airport, you bags will be loaded onto the bus and taken to the resort for you.  You do not have to deal with baggage claim.  When you get to your resort if your room is not ready, they will store you bags and send you off to the parks.  When you get back to your resort that night, your bags will be waiting for you in your room...how COOL is that!

4)  Customize park maps to your family's vacation...choose to print at home or have them mailed to you.  You could even let each child customize their own map with what they are looking forward to the most.  Tuck it away as a special keepsake for them.

Planning for your Walt Disney World Vacation--What to pack?

(not all things will apply to all families, this is just to get your brain moving through your needs)

Everyone in your family will need:
  • T-shirts
  • 1 light long sleeve shirt for wet rides, indoor shows or meals....it can feel cold after being in the heat.
  • shorts
  • pants-if going in the winter months it can be 80 degrees one day and 50 the next.
  • Nicer outfit if you are doing any nicer restaurants.
  • underwear/ bras
  • socks--it is a good idea to tuck a pair into the back pack too in case you feet get wet.
  • Pajamas
  • 2 pairs of tennis shoes (if one gets wet, you will be glad to have another pair.  Some people switch shoes every other day.. Keep in mind that you DO NOT want to buy new shoes for this trip unless you have time to break them in.
  • Swimsuit, Cover-up, and swimming items you might need
  • hat
  • Sunglasses

Infant/Toddler/Child

Toiletries
WDW will provide face soap, hand soap and  shampoo daily...if you use a special brand you need to pack your own,if not save the space and use what they give you.

  • Make-Up
  • Shaving cream/ razor/after-shave

Planning for your Disney Vacation Series---6 months or More

Have you decided that you want to take a Disney World or Disneyland vacation?  If so, then most likely you are overwhelmed with all the choices, options, opinions, planning, and all the tiny details.  It is my hope that with this series of blog posts, I will be able to answer some of your questions.

My first word of advice....don't try to do it yourself.  Before I became a Vacation Planner, I used a Vacation Planner when planning my trips....Contact me and we will work through the planning stages.  Using me as you agent does NOT mean that you give up control...it means you have help to make sure that you choose the right options for your family, that you save as much money as possible, and that your vacation is as MAGICAL as you dream it will be!  I take everything you want and help you form a plan.  When I begin working with a family on planning their  Disney World (this blog will be geared more towards Disney World) or Disneyland vacation the first thing that you need to decide is

When will you be traveling?

So how do you choose the time of year to go?  Most likely you will have to work around some family schedules (sports, school, or work), but if you are pretty flexible, you can time your vacation to catch some extra MAGICAL events, holidays, best deals or lower crowds.

Once you know when then we can begin the planning process!  With Disney it is usually best to plan in advance...don't panic if you are a last minute planner, this vacation can still happen...but planning in advance can help relieve some anxiety.

After choosing your date.... you need to decide if you are going to do all the planning yourself or let someone like me (a vacation planner, specializing in Disney vacations) help you.  Disney travel planners don’t cost you a penny more and I can make sure that we find the BEST DEAL out there, taking the stress off you.  Not sure if a vacation planner is right for you?  Check out this blog I wrote or contact me for a quote If it is FREE, why not let someone else take the stress of your vacation planning away?

These initial decisions will get the vacation planning rolling.  So what else needs to be planned?

Lets start planning: 6 months or more1) Decide on a budget for your vacation!
It is always a good idea to have an idea of how much money you are wanting to spend on your vacation.  It is easy to keep adding and adding...if you have a budget set, it will help you set your limit.

2) Book your Room, Tickets, Dining Package

Based on the budget that you set, you will be able to decide which level of Disney resort that you want to stay at.  Disney resorts are broken into different levels...Value, Moderate, or Deluxe.  You also need to decide how many days that you plan on spending in the parks.  With Disney ticket prices get a lot cheaper after the first 3 or 4 days, so sometimes a longer vacation isn't as expensive as you would think.  There are other options for your tickets as well.  This blog on Park Ticket Options will help explain those choices.  Next you need to decide on the dining plan.  Should you do the Disney Dining Plan? It is true that not everyone needs the dining plan.  It really depends on where your family is.  Our family has young children, so we LOVE the character meals.  Those can get pricey!  We have run the figures and we feel it is the best option for our family right now, but as they get older we may not want to do it on every trip. When getting you a quote, I am able to give you prices with and without the dining plan so that you can see the difference in pricing.

3) Book your Dining Reservations (ADR’s)

Walt Disney World allows you to book your ADR's 180 days in advance.  With the growing popularity of the dining plan, that is very important.  It can be close to impossible to go to Walt Disney World, walk up to a restaurant and get a table without a reservation.  This is especially true of the character meals.  For a list of dining options, you might want to check out the Disney Food Blog for menus and pricing.  You do need to remember that if you decide to change-- you have to cancel the reservation or Disney will charge you. You can make these reservations yourself, but I can do them to take the work off of you.

4) Do you have a Princess, Prince, or Pirate who wants a make-over?
Walt Disney World also allows you to book a reservation for Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique, Pirates League or any of their special events and tours 180 days in advance.  These all fill up quickly and can be impossible to get, so PLAN ahead if at all possible!

Be sure to check back to see the other planning tips for each month as your vacation approaches!  This series is focusing on Walt Disney World, but many of the tips could be applied to other Disney Destinations.  I am hoping to do other series on the other destinations in the future.
